Basics: What are essential oils, and why use them?

This is where you will learn about using essential oils safely and effectively!
First things, first, let’s answer some important questions:

What is an essential oil?

An essential oil is an aromatic compound from a plant. Essential oils can be found in the petals, leaves, bark, roots or even the seeds of a plant.

An essential oil has an aroma…but it is so much more than that. A plant creates an essential oil for various reasons, such as, to attract pollinators, repel predators, to protect itself from harsh elements of nature or even to heal itself if it is damaged. Because of these wonderful, powerful chemical properties, humans have been using essential oils for centuries.

You’ve smelled essential oils when you’ve walked by a rose or after you’ve peeled an orange, and still smell the citrus on your hands hours later. Bottled essential oils are pure, and very potent. Because of their chemical make up, we know the diverse health benefits each plant offers for our homes and bodies.

Why choose doTERRA?

It’s very important to me that I know we are using clean and safe products, cleaning the house, our supplements, and essential oils for my girls and I. While we can buy essential oils from most big-box stores these day, as they have trended into big markets, the labels for cheap oils are frequently vague. They say things like “Natural” “100% Pure” and “Organic” but upon inspection, they usually don’t have information about where they are sourced or how they’re tested. Many oils on the market are heavily contaminated or adulterated with synthetic chemicals.

The FDA in our country does not regulate them. As they also do not regulate our beauty and cleaning products. It’s so important we can read transparent labels and trust who we are buying from.

I choose to work with doTERRA because I believe that they are pure, ethically-sourced and each bottle rigorously tested for safety.

Why use essential oils?

Essential oils make our lives better, happier and even healthier. They support our bodies, minds and spirits.

We can use oils for mental, emotional, & physical wellness. I love using essential oils for many things:

  • Skincare

  • Nontoxic Cleaning

  • Getting motivated

  • Improving my mood

  • Helping me relax

  • Helping my kids sleep

  • Immune support

  • Hormonal balance

  • Aches and pains

  • To name just a few…

How to use oils: 3 ways

There are 3 ways to use essential oils. From there, the sky is the limit when it comes to incorporating essential oils into your daily routines!

Aromatic

This is the most popular way to use essential oils: By simply taking off the cap, and inhaling them. Right out of the bottle, or adding to a spray bottle or diffuser.

Essential oils have wonderful aromas and not only do they smell lovely, they clean our airs, support our bodies, and can help us feel relaxed, motivated, inspired or creative!

There are a few ways I like to use oils aromatically:

  • Diffuse oils in an essential oil diffuser

  • Apply a drop in your palm and inhale it

  • Wear as a personal fragrance

  • Add to my dryer balls, to help my clothes with oils for freshness

Topical

Another fantastic way to use your doTERRA oils is to apply them to your skin!

You can use essential oils topically to ease aches and pains, for nontoxic skincare, or for a big bite or minor skin abrasion. I like to:

  • Massage them into my skin

  • Apply to certain area for tension or discomfort

  • Add to lotions or moisturizers for skincare

  • Put a few drops in my kids’ baths for relaxation

  • Make after-sun sprays and spritz at the beach

For safety please refer to the guide books doTERRA and I include when purchasing your oils. We need to cater to ages and stages. Also make sure we dilute our hot or cooling oils. All of this is covered easily in your reference material.

Internal

You can use doTERRA essential oils internally by ingesting them. I recommend using only doTERRA oils for internal use. I do NOT know any other companies purity, testing or sourcing.

If the side of the bottle reads “Supplement Facts”, then you can use your oil internally through one of these methods:

  • Add a drop to a glass of water and drink

  • Take in an empty pill capsule

  • Put a drop under your tongue

  • Make fancy cocktails, mocktails & warm drinks!

For safety, please refer to the guide books both doTERRA and I include with your purchases. Best to start with 1 drop at a time when introducing a new plant into your system.
